Mission Statement

The mission of Seattle Adaptive Sports is to enable people with physical disabilities to push beyond their limits and reach their full potential.

About This Cause

Seattle Adaptive Sports (SAS) provides the unique opportunity for youth and adults with physical disabilities to participate and compete in adaptive team sports. SAS ensures the availability of this opportunity for personal growth, physical and mental health, and connection - which is not readily available in community nor district programming. The support and management of adaptive sports programs provides access to a basic quality of life activity for a historically marginalized community. SAS athletes have a physical disability, e.g. spina bifida, cerebral palsy, amputation, transverse myelitis, spinal cord injuries, other congenital or acquired conditions affecting their mobility. Regardless of an individual's age, race, gender identity, ethnicity, or ability, there are intrinsic benefits from team sports participation that should not be denied to any population. SAS currently supports the following 4 programs: • Wheelchair Basketball - Wheelchair Basketball season runs September to April, with opportunities to play in regional and national tournaments across the USA. Athletes are assigned a division based on their age and/or skill-level. An annual wheelchair basketball clinic offers drills and skill development for all ages and skill levels! • Sled Hockey –The Seattle Sled Kraken hockey season runs September to April with opportunities to play games against teams in Canada and across the USA at hosted tournaments, including the NHL Sled Classic and USA Hockey Festival. An annual hockey clinic offers a fun experience from the beginner to the advanced. • Power Soccer – Power Soccer is likely to become the next Paralympic sport! We offer a developmental program for ages 5 and up. Soccer guards are provided, so come on out and help us grow this incredible program. • Goalball - Goalball is a Paralympic sport played by blind and low vision athletes. The SAS goalball team, the Cobras, practices weekly from September through May and competes in tournaments locally, regionally, and nationally. The Cobras have up to three different teams during any given season: the King Cobras, the Killer Cobras, and the Queen Cobras. Donations help fund the rent of practice facilities, procurement of safe equipment, hosting of local events and regional qualifying meets, and costs associated with tournaments for athletes and coaches. In reducing the cost barrier for our participants, we are able to continually increase the numbers we serve and support.
