Mission Statement
Jefferson Land Trust is a local, grassroots, non-profit, land conservation organization dedicated to preserving the rural character and iconic landscapes of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. With a mission of "helping the community preserve open space, working lands, and habitat forever”, the Land Trust seeks to preserve wildlife habitat, watersheds, and working farms and forests for the benefit of people and wildlife. With the support of our local community, Jefferson Land Trust stewards more than 18,400 acres of Jefferson County’s most important places.
About This Cause
Jefferson Land Trust’s core program areas include: 1. Working farm conservation 2. Working forest conservation 3. Wildlife habitat protection and restoration 4. Community Education These efforts are guided by our long range Conservation Plan, completed with the help of the community in 2010. This plan outlines ambitious goals and actions, articulating a conservation vision for Jefferson County extending 100 years from now. To achieve this vision, the Land Trust offers creative conservation tools for land preservation, and facilitates partnerships to keep working lands working, productive, profitable and to restoring valuable habitat for endangered salmon species. We accomplish this work through collaboration in many forms: we work with landowners who wish to preserve their properties through permanent land-use restrictions. We work with volunteers to care for preserved lands, provide community education, and increase our collective impact. We collaborate with partners in the “Chumsortium” to bring back vibrant salmon runs, and with the Jefferson LandWorks Collaborative to develop a big-picture approach to ensure the economic viability of farms and forests. We engage with local and national agencies, Tribes, organizations, and individuals to find ways to preserve the places that are crucial to the health of our environment and community, now and into the future.
