Mission Statement
The Black Dollar Days Task Force (BDDTF), Clean Greens program's mission is to establish a supply of fresh organically grown, local produce to low income African Americans and other low-income families living in King County at affordable prices. Our goal is to fight diet related illnesses affecting the African American and other communities of color, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, while promoting and supporting local farmers. We will establish and maintain lasting partnerships with local farmers and organizations to maximize nutritional efforts in the community. We will collaborate with Ethiopian, Hmong, Latino, Sumatran, American Indians and other communities to maximize program inclusion, knowledge and success. We are committed to delivering the best organic, pesticide free, culturally appropriate produce to our residents that would otherwise be unaffordable and many times unattainable. Produce is often harvested the same day it is delivered to the communities. We are committed to educating our community and youth on the benefits of buying locally. The Clean Greens Youth are taught sustainability principles in agriculture, the environment, food justice, and leadership. We will expose them to the US Dept of Agricultural, Environmental Protection Agency, EPA, US Dept of Forestry and other careers that include environmental protection concepts.
About This Cause
Since 2007, BDDTF Clean Greens program has had a farm in Duvall, Washington. Organic, pesticide free vegetables are made available to low income families that are many times over priced or not available. Clean Greens farm stands have been set up throughout communities, in places such as Carolyn Downs Children's Clinic and Harborview Medical Center. This year because of the Corona pandemic, Clean Greens provided produce to the communities free of charge. Community volunteers go to the farms throughout the week, and bring fresh vegetable to the cool box located at 111 21st Ave, Seattle WA., which is given to community weekly. Brochures, advertisements, and public announcements are marketed in the early spring to the community and to store owners of the availability of fresh organic vegetables subscriptions, which are weekly, bi-weekly or monthly subscription of fresh vegetables that are available at a very low price. Produce is cleaned and boxed at the farm or at markets by our volunteers to be delivered or picked up. The boxes also include recipes, nutritional facts, or introductions to cultural vegetables unfamiliar to the residents.
