Mission Statement
The West Sound Wildlife Shelter provides injured, orphaned, and sick wild animals a second chance at life and promotes the well-being of wildlife and their habitats through public outreach, education, and involvement.
About This Cause
The West Sound Wildlife Shelter is celebrating 32 years of caring for wildlife in 2024. The West Sound Wildlife Shelter is a wildlife hospital and education center. Our mission is to improve the quality of life in Western Washington by inspiring humans to protect our environment and providing powerful and unique opportunities for humans to interact with wild animals. We employ four main strategies to accomplish this mission: We rescue, rehabilitate, and release injured, orphaned, and sick wild animals; We provide educational presentations to children and adults; We provide phone counseling to humans on ways to humanely resolve conflicts with wildlife (squirrel in the attic; deer in the garden; bear at the bird feeder; etc.) We also provide opportunities for volunteers to work directly with and learn about wild animals. The Shelter was founded in 1992 and is the only professional wildlife rehabilitation facility and education center serving the Western Puget Sound. The Shelter has cared for over 35,000 animals and responded to well over 100,000 phone calls since it opened its doors. 2024 has been the Shelter’s busiest year ever in terms of animals treated and educational presentations given. Demand for the Shelter’s services is continuously increasing as human development cuts further into the Island and County’s wildlife habitat, causing humans and wildlife to encounter each other more often. The number of animals treated this year is expected to be over 800% higher than the number treated during our first year. This year, the Shelter and many supporters, met this growth with action. We must remain focused on providing the best medical care possible for our increasing patient load.
