Mission Statement
Citizens for a Healthy Bay protects clean water and a healthy environment in the South Puget Sound. Our mission is to engage people in the cleanup, restoration, and protection of Tacoma's Commencement Bay, surrounding waters, and natural habitat. CHB is the only environmental organization that patrols the south Puget Sound for pollution; our patrol vessel allows us to stop and prevent active pollution events.
About This Cause
In Tacoma's Commencement Bay, which once contained some of the most polluted water in the country, Citizens for a Healthy Bay has a legacy of successfully pushing for the cleanup of contaminated sites and advocating for environmental protections. We do this by leveraging our technical expertise and educating and engaging people in the process to push for better, faster cleanups. Our work has helped restore this part of Puget Sound, and life has returned - we regularly see orcas, humpback and gray whales, seals and salmon in Commencement Bay. We have been an important part in the cleanup of 7 of the 8 nationally-significant contaminated sites in Commencement Bay, and we are hard at work to get the 8th cleaned up. In 2017, we helped lead the passage of a moratorium in Tacoma which would prevent any new fossil fuel facilities like oil export facilities, refineries, and the like from being sited here. Using our patrol boat, we monitor for pollution from port operations and nearby businesses twice a week to ensure everyone is doing their part to protect the environment. As a science-based organization, we’ve learned that nothing beats knowing the facts. We make a point of getting on the ground and out on the water to research the best solutions for Commencement Bay’s most pressing environmental needs. Our meaningful partnerships with individuals, government, businesses, and tribes provide pragmatic environmental leadership that builds lasting, positive change. We work side-by-side with local citizens, businesses and government to prevent water pollution and make our community more sustainable. Our use of scientific review to drive unbiased policy allows us to combat the impacts of pollution, climate change, and unsafe development that threaten the safety of our environment. Today, we have the opportunity to change Commencement Bay for the better. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit providing practical, solutions-based environmental leadership in the Puget Sound area.
