NORTHWEST THERAPEUTIC RIDING CENTER

BELLINGHAM, Washington, 98226-0000 United States

Mission Statement

Giving a 'leg up' to people of all abilities.

About This Cause

NWTRC was established in 1993 to address the need for recreational activities for people with disabilities in Whatcom County. We are driven by our mission of ‘Giving a Leg Up to people of all abilities’. In the horse world, a “leg up” means to give someone a boost onto their horse. At the riding center, the boost carries them not just onto their horses back, but also into their lives. The center serves up to 100 unique participants annually with the help of 2 full-time staff, 100 volunteers and 9 board members. NWTRC participants are children and adults with physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral and sensory disabilities. Many participants have secondary diagnoses in multiple categories. Services go beyond horseback riding to include ground activities, grooming and stable management. Each session is designed for the individual’s abilities, therapeutic needs and goals, with the objective of optimizing health, independence and well-being.
