Mission Statement
Help us build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter! We are currently building our 41st and 42nd homes in Skagit County. Our dedicated volunteers work alongside Future Homeowners as they build their own permanent, safe homes. We invite you to join us as we help our Future Homeowners build better lives for themselves and their families. We couldn't do it without our volunteers! In addition to building new homes, we have helped 40 low-income homeowners with minor home repairs and provided more than 300 individuals with on-the-job training. Additionally, our Store has kept 1,700+ tons of used but resalable items out of our local landfills. To find out how to get involved with Skagit Habitat, visit skagithabitat.com.
About This Cause
Skagit Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1994 and works to build strong, stable homes and strong, stable communities. We have helped build forty safe, affordable, and permanent homes alongside volunteers and Future Homeowners, and are currently working with five more families to help them achieve the stability and strength that comes with homeownership. How to Qualify for Skagit Habitat's Affordable Homeownership Program: 1. Attend a Affordable Housing Program Orientation and complete the application. 2. Live in Skagit County for 1 year before applying. 3. Be a US citizen or legal permanent resident. 4. Earn between 30-60% of the Area Median Income for your family size. 5. Have a two-year history of documented income, indicating ability to afford mortgage payments. 6. Currently live in inadequate or substandard housing or pay more than 50% of monthly income toward housing expenses. 7. Pass background and credit checks. 8. Be willing to partner with Skagit Habitat: Contribute 250 hours of sweat equity per adult toward building homes and volunteering with Skagit Habitat; attend budgeting, financial, homeownership, and home maintenance & repairs classes offered by Skagit Habitat. Habitat Helpers: Skagit Habitat's Habitat Helpers Program has completed minor repairs and maintenance for 42 low-income homeowners, allowing them to safely stay in their homes. Habitat Helpers projects are generally completed in one day, and usually include landscaping, yard cleanup, building accessibility ramps, repairing or replacing porches and exterior steps, and installing handrails. Job Training: Skagit Habitat partners with other non-profit organizations to provide an opportunity for their clients to receive on-the-job training and work experience. More than 300 individuals have participated in these programs at the Skagit Habitat Store and on the construction site, learning the skills they need to gain employment. Through these partnerships, we have become one of the largest work-based training centers in the county. Investment in the Community: *Skagit Habitat Homeowners spend an average of $275/month less on their mortgage than they would if they were renting. This totals a savings of more than $3,000/year and is money that puts margin back in their monthly budget, helps end their dependence on community support networks, and build saving for the future. *Skagit Habitat has built more than $4 million in property value. *The Store has saved 1,700+ tons of resalable materials from going into local landfills. We receive donations from individuals, businesses, and offer donation pickup free of charge in Skagit County. Sales from the Store help cover new home construction and Habitat Helpers expenses.
