Mission Statement

OSL is celebrating its 35th year of direct service to un-housed and food insecure families and individuals living in the greater Seattle area. In 2023, a dedicated OSL staff created, delivered, and served more than 1.3 million meals to 66 shelters, tiny house villages, and other programs needing meals, as well as 3 emergency weather shelters. Our Food In Motion food recovery program recovered, procured, and distributed 1,915,960 pounds of food, and other needed resources into the emergency meal system. We shared these resources, at no cost, with 27 meal programs and other agencies throughout the greater Seattle area. The need for the service we offer as a meal provider and food rescue organization continues to escalate in an unstable economy. Adequate Nutrition is a right we are born to, not a privilege we earn.

About This Cause

Serving with an organic ethic, OSL is a unique in its service. Many we serve are unable to access healthful meals in more conventional ways. We continue to be the last line of defense for those in our community living directly on the streets For many we are the only place to find a meal that is nutritionally sound; served with love, and dignity, and without judgment. OSL operates five satellite programs that work in conjunction with our core meal program: Food in Motion: Our food rescue program that procures more than 475,000 lbs of food annually from 42 vendor partners. This high quality ingredients, previously slated for the waste stream, is used throughout our program, and shared with 26 meal provider partners to serve to their clientele. Next Step: Our holistic education program for the un-housed and economically challenged individuals provides culinary training for the creation of nutritionally dense meals in a lab environment. The classes are designed for those who use donated and food bank food as their primary food source. Meals Partnership Coalition: An advocacy and education alliance, for more than 70 meal providers in King County serving compromised populations. Outdoor Meal Site: Managed by OSL for the City of Seattle, the OMS was created to provide a safe, sheltered, and sanitary site where un-housed and food insecure individuals are served with dignity and care. Community Connections Program: OSL provides community service and urban plunging opportunities for more than 4,000 volunteers a year. Our volunteers visit us from all over the world.
