SAFE STREETS CAMPAIGN

TACOMA, Washington, 98409 United States

Mission Statement

Safe Streets mobilizes grassroots community change by (1) Motivating and inspiring action in the community, (2) Teaching leadership strategies so community members solve their own problems, (3) Assisting neighborhoods and youth to define their vision for change, and (4) Connecting people and organizations for success.

About This Cause

Community leaders issued a call to action in 1989 that launched Safe Streets as a grassroots campaign. In the ensuing 25 years, Safe Streets reclaimed neighborhoods, business districts, and schools from extreme violence, gang recruitment of youth, and street-level drug dealing. Safe Streets has organized and trained a network of 125 community groups in high-risk neighborhoods, involving over 13,500 neighborhood leaders and 190,000 residents who work daily to ensure that their neighborhoods are safe. Safe Streets help neighborhoods define their own needs and develops the ability of grassroots leaders to address them with their neighbors. Neighborhood volunteers organize block watches, neighborhood patrols, youth leadership teams, graffiti removal teams, safe routes to schools, and widespread substance abuse and violence prevention education initiatives. Each year, 110 Safe Streets youth leaders in 11 high school and middle school Youth Leading Change (YLC) chapters impact more than 8.000 youth in violence and substance abuse prevention projects in their schools and neighborhoods. Our work is not done. We are committed to continuing our work, developing leaders for long-term change. UNTIL EVERY PIERCE COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD IS SAFE
