Mission Statement
Marine Conservation Institute works to save healthy, living oceans by securing permanent, strong protection for the ocean's most important places. We use the latest science to identify important marine ecosystems and advocate for effective and enduring conservation in Blue Parks that sustain marine life, and us.
About This Cause
Oceans are beautiful, wondrous and awe-inspiring. They are also our planet's largest life support system. Healthy oceans are essential to our lives and livelihoods, but they are in serious trouble. We believe that conserving our oceans - 95% of the habitable space on Earth - is one of the most pressing issues of our time and that the best way to do this is to protect the diversity of life in them. Marine Conservation Institute is a team of highly-experienced marine scientists and environmental policy advocates dedicated to saving ocean life. We use the best science to identify important marine ecosystems around the world and then advocate for their protection. Our team is highly focused and extraordinarily effective. We have achieved major successes for our oceans, including creating thescientific case for President Barack Obama's vast Monuments in the Central Pacific Ocean, creating one of the largest strongly protected areas on the planet. Oceans are essential to life on Earth. Unfortunately for us, the growing human population is putting increasing pressure on the oceans while reducing its ability to sustain us. Oceans generate half of the oxygen we breathe and regulate our climate. They are shielding us from the impacts of climate change and have already absorbed more than their capacity of greenhouse gas emissions and heat. As a result, our oceans are warming and becoming more acidic which is a huge threat to marine life around the world. More than one billion people rely on seafood as their primary source of protein. In the past 50 years, we’ve lost 90% of big fish to our dinner plates and with most commercial fisheries declining around the world, it’s only getting worse. This is a problem on a scale that humankind has never faced. The actions we take – or don’t take – in the coming years will determine the fate of our oceans and, ultimately, the fate of humankind. Efforts to protect critical ocean places aren’t moving quickly enough; to address this issue we launched our Blue Parks initiative to accelerate effective conservation. Less than 10% of oceans are in marine protected areas and roughly 3% is strongly protected – meaning that no commercial extraction or exploitation can occur. This is not enough to safeguard ocean life and address the catastrophic decline in biodiversity. We believe the world needs to protect at least 30% of critical ocean areas to maintain the diversity and abundance of marine life. Fortunately, it’s not too late. Marine life is resilient. If we protect enough, quickly enough in a global network of Blue Parks we can still maintain the vast diversity of marine life. Marine Conservation Institute has the track record of success to achieve major victories for the oceans. Our future and the future of ocean life are inextricably connected. We have the knowledge and skills necessary to save ocean life, but we must act now. Please join us and, together, we can create a better future for our oceans, ocean life and ourselves.
