Mission Statement
CUP OF COOL WATER IS A COMMUNITY COMMITTED TO FOLLOWING THE TEACHINGS OF JESUS BY CARING FOR AND SERVING MARGINALIZED YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS WITHOUT A SPACE OF THEIR OWN TO CALL HOME. WE DO THIS BY CREATING SAFE SPACES WHERE YOUTH CAN BUILD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS BASED ON COMPASSION, UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, AND RESPECT. WE PROVIDE SERVICES TO MEET DAILY NEEDS AND CLIENT-ADVISED PROGRAMS TO HELP THEM SET AND ACHIEVE PERSONAL GOALS.
About This Cause
Officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) in August 1997, we’ve been serving youth with compassion and love for more than 25 years. We carry out our mission through street outreach, a drop-in center, life skills, mentorship, and job training programs while emphasizing our core values of community, unconditional love, relationship, and empowerment. CCW is a unique ministry in the Spokane area, which has a 30 percent higher youth homelessness rate than the rest of Washington and the Nation. In 2019, CCW made more than 9,800 connections with youths through its drop-in center, related programs, and one-on-one follow-ups. This number represented 568 unduplicated youths who received services and experienced the unconditional love of Christ from staff and volunteers. At the drop-in center, we create a safe environment where youths can eat a meal and have some of their needs met in a loving, Christ-centered community. The drop-in center is a connection point between youth and staff, volunteers, and community partners, including housing specialists, social service agencies, and mental health providers. It also provides access to basics such as clothing, showers, laundry, internet, and personal hygiene supplies. CCW staff and volunteers reach out to youth on the streets weekly, walking the streets of downtown Spokane to meet youth where they are. The primary purpose of our Street Outreach Program is to establish rapport, meet some basic needs, and encourage youth to visit the drop-in center for a hot meal, and receive additional services. Our Life Skills Classes provide dynamic and empowering opportunities to engage youths while equipping them with skills essential to exiting street life. Life Skills are taught by strategic community partners who are subject matter experts in the fields of housing, employment, money management, substance abuse, and physical health. Class size is limited for these sessions to create an intimate learning environment focused on youth and their personal growth goals. Life Skills classes are a low- to mid-barrier engagement effort with youth; in order to participate in these classes, youth must sign up in advance and arrive on time. Our Mentorship Program helps youths to develop self-care, self-sufficiency, and relationship-centered skills. This 16-week program consists of weekly classes, one-on-one meetings with a mentor, and 2 hours of community service each week. This program increases a youth’s ability to advocate for themselves, manage time, set goals and generally make better life decisions. The mentoring program is CCW’s highest barrier program, as it requires youths to make a commitment to complete the entire program. Lastly, our Youth & Young Adult Workforce Development Program provides young people with skills essential to gaining and maintaining employment. Youth entering the program are welcomed into a community of support, compassion, and empowerment. Youth receive a weekly program stipend, nutritious meals, and transportation to and from the program-training sites. As youth progress through the program, CCW works with the Spokane Neighborhood Action Partners (SNAP) to acquire permanent housing and/or vouchers for youths as they near graduation. A portion of each youth’s program stipend is used to give each graduate the financial means to transition to permanent housing; thereby ensuring he or she has a stable living environment prior to starting his or her new job. Program participants experience compassion and grace as they develop a strong work ethic and learn to work as members of a team. Youth who complete the program are well-prepared for entry level positions in almost any industry.
