Mission Statement
PVNet is primarily volunteer staffed and self funded. PVNet’s mission is to provide education & technology learning opportunities and training options for youth and adults throughout the south bay and neighboring cities. Our programs fill the STEM education gap that schools cannot provide.
About This Cause
PVNet is primarily volunteer staffed and self funded. PVNet’s mission is to provide education & technology learning opportunities and training options for all surrounding communities for free or lowest possible cost. We develop programs which focus on new technologies that help educate our future leaders in technology. We work to ensure that training is cutting edge and work with technology companies to better utilize what we have in our technology center. Providing a program to teach girls to code is an imperative program for high school girls considering a major or minor in Computer Science. There are very few programs which help girls learn to code in the public or private schools and therefore there is no early preparation available to them. Our social norms dissuade girls form pursuing technical careers and therefore their first exposure to the technology of coding is in high school, and that’s too late. We have to help them. We find that a great many of their male contemporaries begin to learn about technology and coding at age or younger 8, and that the problem is not that boys are far ahead of the girls but that the girls are far behind the learning curve due to their late start. PVNet’s programs provide the only regional learning opportunity and support mechanism for girls that helps to prevent dropouts and failed classes on report cards and transcripts. Girls who become interested in coding in high school 90% of the time have no prior experience and cannot keep and pass the class. We offer immersive technology internships with unlimited hours as well as weekly instructor led 2 hour classes to 25+ girls, and 2 weekly, 2 hour labs with an instructor. The program is year round. Coding is centered on JAVA to help girls prepare for and pass AP Computer Science classes and the test. We can also help them learn C++, C#, Python, PHP, Unity, RobotC, and more., The program strives to inspire high school girls to explore Computer Science and Engineering. Students learn coding basics, and build exciting projects. Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, yet girls are being left behind. While interest in computer science has ebbed over time, the biggest drop off happens between the ages of 13-17. The lack of women and girls in computer science is a well-documented problem. The program strives to debunk common misconceptions surrounding Computer Science and computer programming. We want to show our students that they can code, that coding is useful and fun. Classes are designed for beginners with no programming experience. They will learn everything they need to get started in the programming basics class. Most of our students come from the Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, El Segundo, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lennox, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, San Pedro, Wilmington, Gardena and Torrance.
