Mission Statement
Our mission is to enrich the lives of caregivers and adults living with dementia through teaching and demonstrating the Elderwise philosophy and practice of Spirit-Centered Care.
About This Cause
Elderwise has been providing arts-based enrichment programs in Seattle for adults living with memory loss for over twenty five years. In addition to our signature adult day social program, Elderwise offers watercolor outreach programs in partnership with local retirement communities and Seattle Parks and Recreation. In 2020, the founder of Elderwise published a book, along with co-author Ruth Neuwald Falcon, titled The Elderwise Way: A Different Approach to Life with Dementia. The book expands on the Elderwise philosophy of Spirit-Centered Care®, which centers on recognizing the wholeness and immutable essence of individuals regardless of cognitive change. To clarify Spirit-Centered Care® is not about any religion. It is about what is deepest and most important to us and this may be seen differently by different individuals. Our book seeks to give professional and family caregivers the tools that Elderwise program facilitators use, including deep listening and working from a position of equality. Using the Spirit-Centered Care philosophy, facilitators for the day program create a safe and welcoming environment for participants to experience openness, a sense of community, and provide the opportunity for personal growth. The foundation of our work is to enable caregivers, family members and healthcare professionals to recognize the value and wholeness shared by all in their work with seniors. Elderwise now has an accredited online education program based on our book. Elderwise is part of the inaugural group of collaborating organizations in a new community gathering space for adults living with dementia and their families called the Memory Hub. The Memory Hub, a partnership created by the University of Washington Memory and Brain Wellness Center, houses the Elderwise day program and provides more opportunities for Elderwise to continue serving the dementia community in Seattle. Elderwise staff also serve on the Momentia Stewardship Team and are members of the Dementia-Friendly Washington Learning Collaborative. Elderwise has a scholarship program for lower income community members with memory loss.
