Unlocking the potential of the next generation of creative thinkers. The Youth in Focus mission is to equip youth to share their ideas and values with the world through photography and art. We believe art is a powerful medium of change to create a healthy, vibrant, equitable, and just society for all. We teach students the tools and confidence they need to succeed in education, life, and career.
About This Cause
Providing Access | Fostering Creativity | Building Community YIF is the only photography-specific arts and youth development organization in Seattle. Our digital, darkroom, and video-based photography programs are a direct response to the need for quality career-connected and accessible arts education programming. With limited curriculums in public schools - particularly in visual art and digital media - our programs equip youth to use their creativity to shine a light on issues and topics that matter to them. We serve teens ages 13- 19, who are disproportionately impacted by historical and current inequities. 70% of young people in our programs are BIPOC, more than 50% experience poverty, 15% are English language learners, and 43% identify as LGBTQ+. These students not only face inequities in their educational experience and access to quality programming, but often do not have a safe and supportive place for skills development and growth outside of traditional school hours. Rooted in our values of equity, inclusion, and access, we provide free after-school programs and a pay-what-you-can tuition model for summer programs. We provide students with cameras, equipment, and all necessary technology for the duration of the program. We also provide free snacks and bus passes to support transportation to and from program days.
