Mission Statement

You know that walking is one of the best ways to stay healthy, reduce pollution, and avoid traffic. It’s also one of the best ways to connect with cool people and great places. Whether we are commuting to work, school, meeting friends, or exploring a new neighborhood, a walk can become an adventure. Since 2001, Feet First has been working across Washington to ensure all communities are walkable and encouraging more people to walk.

About This Cause

Since 2001, Feet First has been working to ensure all communities in Washington are walkable. We believe everyone has a basic right to walk safely for school, work, shopping and recreation. Our mission is to promote the growth and sustainability of walkable communities – a cornerstone of public health, social equity, safety, and community engagement. Our specific work includes promoting and facilitating youth programs (safe routes to schools, storytelling) and policies, creating neighborhood walking maps, conducting walking audits and supporting wayfinding signage, sponsoring interesting and informative walking events, and advocating for programs, policies, and capital spending to benefit walking and increase the number of people of all ages and abilities to choose to go by foot. There is a direct correlation between the populations we serve and the lack of walkable areas available to them. Our projects also tend to target populations at lower socioeconomic levels and those with recognized health disparities.
