Mission Statement

Gateway Homes originally incorporated as a non-profit organization in March 1983. Gateway was founded by two families who had adult children with mental illness and did not want their children to live the remainder of their adult lives in a state hospital. From this personal experience, Gateway was born. The mission of Gateway is to provide transitional residential treatment to adults diagnosed with mental illness who are striving to live independently. The vision of Gateway is to make recovery a reality for adults who are seeking independence. For the past 34 years Gateway has been focused on implementing the mission of the organization, providing quality services to as many adults in the Commonwealth of Virginia as possible with the resources available. Gateway now has facilities in Chesterfield, Fairfax, and Williamsburg and provides services to over 110 individuals with serious mental illness annually.

About This Cause

Gateway currently operates three programs located in Chesterfield, Fairfax, and Williamsburg. Chesterfield The 40-acre campus located in Chesterfield, Virginia houses 16 individuals in a Supervised Living Center providing 24 hours per day of supervision seven days per week. Across the campus, there are three apartment buildings for the Supportive Living Program providing a total of 14 units housing 25 individuals. As individuals transition off campus to their permanent living in the community, Gateway continues to provide supportive services including access to an individual social worker, participation in all outings and activities, Psychosocial Rehabilitation at the activity center, the outpatient clinic, and the vocational program. AA/NA groups in the community are also attended by individuals who have a co-occurring diagnosis of Substance Use. The outpatient clinic is staffed by a psychiatrist who is present for weekly appointments, the nurse practitioner, and an individual therapist and occupational therapist. Currently, Gateway is serving 41 individuals in housing on campus and an additional 18 in the community setting who were transitioned to the housing of their choice. Their residences in the community were furnished and turn key ready when the transition was initiated. These residents continue to receive Mental Health Skills Building from Gateway's Community Mental Health Clinician until they no longer need this service. Referrals for the Chesterfield program are accepted from any source. Fairfax In July 2011, Gateway entered into a contract with Health Planning Region II to provide staffing and services for an Intensive Care Residential Treatment Center (ICRT) in Annandale, Virginia. The individuals who utilize the services in this location are admitted directly from Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute and present with idiosyncratic behaviors and challenging needs as they discharge from the hospital after varying periods of institutionalization. During the past six years, Gateway successfully transitioned many of these residents to other types of housing options with skills for more independent living. In May 2017, Gateway was awarded a new contract with HPR II and Fairfax County which renewed the existing ICRT, added a second ICRT, and provided for expansion for five facilities for Supervised Living and services for Supportive Residential. The second ICRT opened in August 2017 and three of the Supervised Living facilities opened in September 2017. Gateway is providing psychiatric and nursing care for the residents at the ICRTs and Fairfax CSB is providing services to the residents of the Supervised Living facilities unless they choose to use Gateway outpatient services. Gateway is also providing Supportive Residential Services to those individuals who transition out of Supervised Living and into other types of community housing arrangements in the future. Williamsburg / Hampton Roads In January 2016, Gateway was awarded a contract with Health Planning Region V to provide one Intensive Care Residential Treatment Facility and one Supervised Living facility to serve a total of 16 individuals being discharged from Eastern State Hospital {ESH). Each facility houses eight individuals. Since opening in September 2016, Gateway has been able to accommodate 30 discharges from Eastern State Hospital and is focused on the transition of these residents to permanent housing options. Twelve of the 16 residents at this location are employed. Since this population is often challenging to place, the program has been especially successful in meeting the needs of ESH. Additionally, Gateway provides the psychiatric, nursing and individual therapy sessions, case management assistance and Mental Health Skills Building to the individuals in this project.
