Mission Statement

Ethos Inc. was founded in 1998 in direct response to budget cuts that virtually eliminated music education in schools. We are dedicated to making music education, and its many benefits, accessible to historically excluded youth in Portland and across Oregon. We partner with community organizations, schools, and families to guide our processes and ensure our programs are inclusive and culturally responsive. Ethos believes that regardless of socioeconomic status, geographic location, abilities, religion, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, gender identity, or sexual orientation, all students deserve access to the well documented benefits of music education.

About This Cause

At Ethos Inc., we are dedicated to bringing the benefits of music education to historically excluded youth with culturally relevant programs that meet kids where they are. Our programs include: Pass the Mic - A free after-school and summer camp program that provides music education for students over 14 years with immigrant backgrounds. Pass the Mic provides students with free instruments, which are theirs to keep. Music Corps - A free after-school and summer camp program in the public schools, and in association with Multnomah County Library, that provides high-quality music education for students in grades 1-12 who might not otherwise have access. Music Lessons for Kids - Offers sliding-scale individual, group, and ensemble lessons to students K-12, on a variety of instruments, including digital music-making, at our headquarters. Instruction is throughout the school year and during summer camps, with recitals and other performance opportunities year-round. Make Waves - Ethos partners with the community group Make Waves which sources funds and instruments to provide individual lessons scholarships for up to 20 students per year. Additionally, the project helps expand our network of diverse teaching musicians to create more inclusive, equitable experiences in music education. Ethos/AmeriCorps Rural Outreach Program - Places and supports full-time music facilitators in rural Oregon schools that are otherwise unable to provide music education due to lack of funding and geographic isolation.
