ACCOUNTING CAREER AWARENESS PROGRAM

SEATTLE, Washington, 98122-0066 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to increase the awareness and understanding of accounting and business career opportunities among underrepresented high school students of color.

About This Cause

The Accounting Career Awareness Program (ACAP) is a professional and personal youth development program (and organization) serving students of color who are underrepresented in the accounting and business fields. We believe that by offering educational, development, and advancement opportunities for students, we can increase their awareness of, and access to, educational and professional opportunities, while at the same time fostering diversity in these professional fields. The Accounting Career Awareness Program (ACAP) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization serving Washington State high school students of color who are traditionally underrepresented in the accounting field. ACAP was born in 1980, when accountants Mel Minnis, Boh Dickey and Ron Leveret became concerned about the underrepresentation of people of color in the accounting field. ACAP's founders shared the belief that, by offering educational, developmental, and advancement opportunities for students, they could increase their awareness of, and access to, accounting-related educational and professional opportunities for underserved populations, while at the same time fostering much-needed diversity in the accounting field of study and profession. With the goal of preparing young people for careers in accounting and business, they piloted the first Seattle ACAP program. In 2020, ACAP will celebrate its 40th year. The work of Seattle ACAP has always been centered around its signature program: Residency Week. Seattle ACAP’s summer Residency Week program is for students enrolled in high school throughout the Greater Seattle/Tacoma areas who will be sophomores, juniors, and seniors during the school year immediately following the summer program. Residency Week introduces qualified participants to the accounting, business, economics and finance professions through a dynamic educational and experiential week spent on the UW-Seattle campus. The week-long residential program involves networking with diverse professionals from the accounting field, as well as University of Washington faculty, business leaders, government & community mentors, as well as fellow ACAP participants and alumni. Throughout the week, students are introduced to the accounting profession through educational seminars, off-campus visits to major accounting firms and local businesses. During Residency Week, participants are also immersed in the college experience as they stay overnight at the University of Washington for a week, experiencing campus and learning about student life, college admissions and academics, and the many opportunities offered on the UW and other college campuses. Participants hear from and interact with campus and industry professionals about campus life, pursuing relevant majors, and about working in the accounting field after college. All Residency Week participants have the opportunity to be matched with a professional mentor from the accounting field. This takes place during Residency Week, and that mentorship relationship is available to them for an entire year – or more – following the program. Residency Week and the ACAP mentorship program are free of charge to all participants, and include all housing, food, and activities.
