Mission Statement
Muslim Housing Services (MHS)
About This Cause
Since 1999, Muslim Housing Services (MHS) has served Seattle and King County homeless families who are primarily refugees and second migration immigrants from East Africa, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and other parts of Africa. Located in Southeast Seattle/Rainier Valley, Muslim Housing Service’s eligible clients receive extensive case management to help them overcome cultural, linguistic, social, financial, health, employment, educational, and system barriers to attain self-sufficiency and achieve permanent housing. MHS’s Case Managers and staff currently speak the following languages: English, Somali, Spanish, Portuguese. Oromo, Swahili, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Tigrinya & Amharic. MHS’s experience in helping many diverse at risk minority families makes us the first place where many families come for assistance when they arrive in the region, or fall into difficulty. Some families come from as far away as the King County/ Pierce County border by public transportation just to get help and meet with our Case Managers. Many families describe frustration in trying to get assistance from other places and are insistent in getting assistance from our Case Managers on issues with landlords, utility bills, immigration, evictions, and domestic violence. For the clients in our program, a case management plan is developed that addresses those areas related to housing such as job readiness; employment, education and training; limited English proficiency; life skills, health/mental health needs, legal issues, family unification, childcare and domestic violence intervention. We have developed extensive linkages and collaborative relationships with outside service providers to provide support services and advocacy not available on site. Through contact with housing providers, and with funds for rental assistance, MHS places families into non time-limited housing. Ongoing case management services ensure that family’s needs are met and permanent housing is the outcome.
