Mission Statement
Somali Family Service, guided by its community champions, helps Somali and other African families in becoming responsible, independent and contributing members of San Diego through its programs that promote health, educational and economic success, and leadership efforts.
About This Cause
Somali Family Service of San Diego was established in 2000 as a non-profit, community-based social service organization. Since its inception, the organization has provided culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services to members of the San Diego Somali and other East African communities, easing their transition and ensuring successful functioning in their new home. SFS has expanded its reach and services to the Middle Eastern communities and Afghan refugees in San Diego. Currently, SFS provides services to community members speaking various languages including Somali, Dari, Pashto, Arabic, Amharic, Congolese, and Swahili. SFS serves male and female youth (school-age to 18); adults (18 and above); and seniors. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, SFS has reached over 150,000 community members throughout San Diego. SFS's main programs are: 1) LION/Youth Program that directs youth toward positive activities through leadership trainings, financial literacy and higher education workshops, and recreational activities and opportunities; 2) Health & Wellness Program (SHIFA) Program provides education on: awareness about COVID-19 testing and vaccination, early childhood development, women and men's health, mental health issues, prevention of chronic diseases, and mental health issues; 3) Microenterprise Program aims to assist low-income individuals and small businesses to start or expand their business; 4) Refugee Integration Program aims to help refugees and immigrants become economically self-sufficient.
