Mission Statement

The mission of The First Tee of Greater Seattle is to positively impact the lives of young people from all backgrounds by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf.

About This Cause

Since 2003, The First Tee of Greater Seattle has worked to positively impact the lives of young people in King County by seamlessly transforming the golf course into a classroom for the impartation of life skills, core values, and healthy habits. The program began by making golf affordable and accessible to 224 young people through summer classes at held Jefferson Park Golf Course on Beacon Hill. Now, the program reaches more than 1,500 young people annually through golf programs held at 4 local golf facilities and reaches more than 67,000 kids annually through programs held at local 152 public and parochial schools. Through The First Tee’s proven Life Skills Curriculum, the program use the game of golf to teach youth self-management, interpersonal communication, conflict-management, problem solving, and goal-setting skills in an engaging and impactful way. Our lessons use the game of golf to instill in participants The First Tee Nine Core Values: Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy, and Judgment. The First Tee of Greater Seattle serves kids ages 5 to 17 years old. We are open to all kids but targets young people who would ordinarily not be able to participate due to financial barriers. One-third of our participants full scholarships to cover our subsidized annual membership fee of $99. The First Tee has a number of community partners for whom we provide programming to children at no cost. These partners include Therapeutic Health Services, a program supporting young people impacted by chemical dependency, Ryther Child Center, a sub-acute inpatient treatment program that helps kids overcome trauma, mental health and behavioral issues, Griffin Boys Home, a therapeutic foster care facility for young people facing separation from parents through deportation, and a host of Boys & Girls Clubs and community centers.
