Mission Statement
Support for an indiginous Maasai community in southeast Kenya including education, health care, economic development, and conservation.
About This Cause
Maasai Association (MA) is a community-based non-profit organization 501 (c)(3) based in Bellevue, WA, and Kajiado County of Kenya. The organization’s humanitarian and relief work is aimed at building schools, health centers, water systems, and supporting sustainable economic development and environmental conservation projects in the Maasai region. Our mission is "To empower the Maasai people so that they can make better-informed decisions affecting their future, and to minimize permanent migration of young men and women from the community into urban areas (brain drain)." Since 2001 we have accomplished the following: • Built and are managing Merrueshi Primary School • Built and are managing Maasai High School • Built and are managing the Merrueshi Village Health Center • Built a maternity wing at Merrueshi village health center • Started a mobile clinic/emergency transport vehicle for the remotest villages in the region • Distributed over 150 cows and over 50 goats to families devastated by prolonged droughts • Commissioned a 10 kilometer fresh water pipeline for 5,000 beneficiaries • Restored 30 Waterholes/ shallow dams for wildlife such as zebras, wildebeest, giraffes, and elephants in the region • Constructed Maasai Cultural Center including Maasai Women’s Cooperative Shop Maasai Association believes in result-based projects. From 2001- 2014 an estimated 1,000 children have attended MA’s schools (grade 1 - 12th). Four graduates have returned to the village after college and are currently serving as teachers in our schools. An estimated 6,000 villagers, mostly women and children, have benefited from Merrueshi Village Health Center. An estimated 95% of children less than five years old have received immunizations through MA’s community health initiative. The ambulance has enabled laboring women in distress situation to reach the maternity center and deliver their children in a safe and professional environment. The health center has also enabled us to deliver educational information on topics including newborn after care, hygiene, water safety, communicable disease prevention, immunization boosters, nutrition etc. to the villagers residing far away from our catchment area. An estimated 500 drought victims have benefited from MA’s Cows and Goat Program. Over a hundred women have benefited from the Maasai Women Cooperative shop initiated by MA. Hundreds of wildlife returned to Merrueshi Group Ranch as a result of MA’s wildlife and habitat conservation project.
