Mission Statement
Birds Connect Seattle advocates and organizes for cities where people and birds thrive.
About This Cause
Since 1916, Birds Connect Seattle (formerly Seattle Audubon) members and volunteers have continually worked for the protection, restoration and preservation of natural habitat for birds and other wildlife. These years of experience have never been more important than today as the growth in our region stresses many habitats and their inhabitants. Birds Connect Seattle envisions cities that integrate and value nature, minimize threats to birds, and protect habitat. Our work is centered on urban conservation, regional bird-friendly initiatives, and equity and justice. All of our programs integrate these values as we strive to protect local bird species. ♦ Urban Conservation -- We work closely with concerned community members, local decision-makers, and like-minded organizations to promote environmentally sound public policy and private practices that protect habitat for birds and nature. This work includes promoting bird-safe building practices, reducing the use of anti-coagulant rodenticides, protecting our tree canopy, and limiting impacts of domestic cats. ♦ Education -- We provide hands-on opportunities for children, students, adults, and families to learn about and enjoy and protect birds and the natural environment. We offer online and in-person classes for all knowledge levels, field trips and bird walks, in-school curriculum and rental kits, Fledglings and Friends (pre-schooler), Nature Camp, and Young Birders (for teens). ♦ Science -- We initiate, encourage, manage and coordinate science-based projects to provide a scientific basis and analysis of advocacy initiatives, positions, and legal proceedings. These survery include our Christmas Bird Count, Puget Sound Seabird Survey, Climate Watch, Neighborhood Bird Project, dBird.org, and our Collision Monitoring Project.
