Mission Statement
The mission of this Society is to educate and remember the passengers fleeing religious prosecution: to honor their strength, courage and abiding faith; and to maintain and defend their principle of civil and religious liberty to which they committed their lives. We are dedicated to preserving the history of our Mayflower ancestors through genealogical and historical research, including telling the story of the Pilgrims to keep their story alive and encouraging a passion for history. We celebrate the Pilgrim Spirit and fellowship with others who share a common ancestry and are interested in advancing awareness in the history and contributions of the Pilgrims.
About This Cause
We are descendants of English Separatists who immigrated in 1620 aboard the Mayflower to escape religious persecution and imprisonment under King James I of England. We are amateur genealogists and historians who have verified our lineage, through vital records, wills, land grants, and other records, to the highest of genealogical standards, proving our family line descends from one of the 26 families who survived the Atlantic crossing and that first Plymouth winter. Membership in our society offers a unique blend of camaraderie, education, and historical preservation. We host a variety of events throughout the year, including lectures, social gatherings, and commemorative ceremonies, where you can connect with fellow descendants and enthusiasts. These events provide a platform to share your passion for history, exchange genealogical information, and forge lasting friendships with others who share a common heritage. Chartered in 1912, The Washington Society of Mayflower Descendants is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization of Mayflower ‘cousins’, WASMD is one of 54 ‘memberships Societies’ [the United States, the District of Columbia, Canada, Australia and Europe] within the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, founded in 1897, and headquartered in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
