Mission Statement

OUR VISION is to be a Force of Hope to the hungry, a safeguard for food security and a caretaker for a sustainable community by: 1) improving the lives of our community by reducing hunger with emergency food supplies; 2) stabilizing communities with the nutritional resources they need when they need them; 3) forging strategic partnerships to build a food security system with capacity-building programs to drive enhanced efficiency, accelerated scalability and sustainability. OUR MISSION is to Nourish Lives: 1) as a safety net with emergency food distribution to support the difficult journey out of poverty; 2) as a provider of food security with crisis relief when responding to food disruptions when market and logistic systems are most stressed and food often becomes the most immediate need; 3) as a builder of resilient communities with expanded warehouse design to store food locally and reduce waste.

About This Cause

OUR HISTORY began in order to meet the need for emergency food for our community. The Food Pantry of Wasilla, Alaska was founded in 1989 as a ministry of the Good Shephard Lutheran Church. The Food Pantry of Wasilla became a member of the Valley Christian Conference and organized under the guidance of a board of directors and in 1994, registered as a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. By the end of 2005, The Food Pantry of Wasilla, Alaska expanded to include a federal program, The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP), as a second distribution. In 2006, organization expanded again and opened a second location on the Palmer-Wasilla Highway, co-located with the Food Bank of Alaska headquartered out of Anchorage, Alaska. Operating out of two locations was a great benefit to the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, as total distributions increased by more the 70%. The organization continued to thrive and grow throughout the Matanuska-Susitna Borough by serving many other smaller pantry locations, which necessitated a final re-organization with a name change to The MatSu Food Bank in 2013. The MatSu Food Bank currently operates Monday-Friday, from 10:00am – 1:00pm and provides transportation, storage and distribution including pick-up and drop-off with no charge to borough food pantries, food kitchens and other NGOs.
