Mission Statement

The Los Angeles Innocence Project's mission is to exonerate the wrongly convicted, uncover and remedy past misuse of forensic and other scientific evidence in the courtroom, and educate the dialogue between scientists and stakeholders in the criminal legal system to prevent future injustice.

About This Cause

Litigate: Los Angeles Innocence Project provides pro bono investigatory services and legal representation to indigent individuals who were convicted of crimes they did not commit in Central and Southern California. We also assist in complex or high-stakes cases in jurisdictions outside California when asked to do so. Educate: Through our collaboration with the California Forensic Science Institute at Cal State LA, we work alongside graduate students who are training to become the next generation of criminalists. We also teach undergraduates about the most common causes of wrongful convictions and help bring awareness of the inherent problems within the criminal justice and judicial systems to local and state lawmakers so they are better informed and prepared to create a more just system. Collaborate: LAIP proudly works alongside pro bono counsel from law firms, who provide assistance and expertise in various areas on complex cases. Through our work, LAIP educates the public, scientists, and stakeholders in the criminal legal system about the contributing causes of wrongful convictions and incarcerations. LAIP is committed to identifying and eradicating racial injustice in the criminal legal system and to supporting all victims of wrongful convictions, their families, and their communities.
