About This Cause
South Sound Dance Access is a non-profit organization fostering a healthy and resilient community in the South Puget Sound region through ensuring access to dance, movement, and the performing arts for people of all ages, as a means of mental and physical health, creative expression, and community building. We live out our mission by bringing movement education out from the studio setting into community spaces, to meet people where they are. We primarily serve public schools, seniors, and community centers. Access and equity are at the heart of our mission therefore, all programs are offered for free or low cost. We envision a world where people of all ages have access to the performing arts, dance, and movement regardless of socioeconomic class, race, gender, sexuality, or any other form of social positioning. We believe that dance and the arts can be life saving work that is vital for mental and physical health, and this belief is backed by emerging science regarding the body-mind connection, social emotional learning, and the nervous system. Our work sits at the nexus of physical and mental health. Studies demonstrate that engagement in arts and sports is a resiliency building factor in kids deemed “at risk” due to high Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) scores and other life-outcome indicators. The pedagogy we use in our programs – Brain Dance and Brain Compatible Dance Education – was created using developmental science to specifically support mind-body connection, nervous system regulation, improve attention spans, and social-emotional learning. We believe that opportunities for movement and expression are vital for the mental and physical health of our kids. Our programs are not only about having fun and getting exercise, they are also about equipping children with necessary regulation tools to navigate the challenges of the world and their lives. This is true not only in our youth programs, but for our adults and elders programs too! We believe dance is for everyone and movement is medicine. Everything we do is born out of that belief.
