Mission Statement

In the Children’s Wisdom Center all volunteers endeavor to offer a prepared space where children’s wonder, wisdom and dignity can be nourished with a welcome that invites each child’s pondering of God, of being a beloved one, of being filled with peace.

About This Cause

1. Jesus, Our Good Shepherd, is at the center. God is our teacher and leader in this endeavor. 2. We are entrusted with a space where children encounter God, and all in the center humbly “listen to God with the children.” We call this space an atrium. 3. All of the materials we lovingly prepare for children flow from our gratitude for God’s gifts of creation. With respect for animal and plant life we attempt to make sustainable choices. 4. Our work in this endeavor began as a seed in the Roman Catholic Church nurtured by the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. All in the Center humbly hold gratitude for its origins while also being led to encounter and learn from diverse Christian practices and, particularly with the children ages 9-12, interfaith traditions. 5. The center commits to ever more deeply welcoming all children and their families. We humbly acknowledge that we are shaped by cultural stories about race, ability, sexuality and gender, and that these stories can place barriers between our love for one another and our experience of God’s love. We will frequently renew our commitment to recognizing and removing any barriers we can, so every child experiences an invitation into Holy belonging. To begin, we examine our personal prejudices and continue learning about white privilege and systemic racism, gender expressions, and accessible design for all abilities. As a practice, we look to parents and guardians to help us understand their child’s particular needs. 6. The center offers encounter, not classes, spiritual practice not religious affiliation, exploration not doctrinal statements. This endeavor is not overseen by any one religion or church. 7. This endeavor is guided faithfully by the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd USA (cgsusa.org). 8. We ask parents and grown-ups to guide the Center’s volunteers about their family’s faith practices so we are responsive to the children’s lived experiences. 9. We ask parents and grown-ups who desire sacramental preparation for their child to seek this preparation at their own churches. 10. We invite parents and guardians to consider introducing at home some of what the child experiences in the atrium. 11. Because we are open to all traditions, children may encounter other faith expressions. We ask that parents and guardians understand this before we begin. 12. We humbly recognize we will make mistakes and are committed to learn from these mistakes so as better to serve the Child and God.
