Austin Rainbow Theatre provides affordable theatre that focuses on creating belonging, reducing stigma, honoring diverse LGBTQIA+ history and stories, and amplifying LGBTQIA+ artist and community voices.
About This Cause
Austin Rainbow Theatre is the only theatre company in Central Texas that focuses exclusively on LGBTQIA+ programming. Theatre is a venue of education that provides people the opportunity to learn about different ideas, cultures, and struggles. It is integral to provide such education to people given the notable impact of stigma, discrimination, and bias on the lives of LGBTQIA+ people. There is a significant ability to change lives, possibilities, and experiences with a safe and affirming LGBTQIA+ theatre that facilitates belonging, education, and welcoming environments for people within the community. The aforementioned are notable factors that increase resiliency within LGBTQIA+ populations, which in turn may positively impact mental health and combat stigma. For example, a 2019 study conducted by the University of Louisville’s Department of Psychology at the Actor’s Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky found that engagement with theatre promotes positive psychological stimulation, a sense of community, and social engagement. In addition, a 2023 study commissioned by the Texas Cultural Trust found that the arts can reduce depression by up to 48%. The principles of education and community engagement are at the forefront of all of ART's endeavors. Moreover, ART is already leading the charge to provide more equitable compensation. In fact, ART is already earning a reputation in that regard, as evidenced in this testimonial from an actor: "ART walks the walk and I tell that to everyone I meet. I was paid more for Sordid Lives than I was paid for the other four plays I did last year combined. Y'all are pushing this market in the right direction."
