Mission Statement
Power Forward Utah is striving to end the stigma of addiction by disrupting the life-threatening disease of Substance Use Disorder through Education, Empowerment and Innovation. Power Forward Utah is committed to changing outcomes for those struggling with this deadly disease by breaking the stigma of Substance Use Disorder. There is life after SUD and freedom from the cycle of relapse when individuals, families and communities have access to resources that allow people to recover with dignity and live a full life in recovery. Substance Use Disorder is not a personal failing, it is a DISEASE. One that can, and SHOULD, be treated like any other.
About This Cause
Founded in 2022, Power Forward Utah (PFU) is striving to end the stigma of addiction by disrupting the life-threatening disease of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) through education, empowerment and innovation. PFU was established in honor of Zane James, a 19-year-old all-American athlete who tragically lost his life in 2018 due to the intersection of three critical community issues associated with SUD: 1) sports-related traumatic brain injury (TBI), 2) trafficking of counterfeit pills, and 3) local law-enforcement’s response to individuals in mental crisis. Zane’s strength and persistence to overcome SUD, contrasted with the heartbreaking experience of encountering gap after gap in the available treatment resources, inspired his family to found PFU. PFU's mission is to provide support to individuals with SUD by connecting them with resources to live in recovery with dignity and lead productive and meaningful lives. The organization is modeled from the proven success of Massachusetts-based partner, Power Forward Inc. PFU supports communities with educational programs that break down the long-standing, flawed narratives of who is really at risk for SUD, examine the complex causes of this epidemic, and push back on the unnecessarily demoralizing stigma of the disease. Through this work, PFU aims to generate better outcomes for individuals and families who are faced with an SUD crisis. To achieve, this PFU focuses on three primary pillars: EDUCATION Education is the key to changing the way SUD is understood and how recovery can be supported by communities and families. A foundational tenet of PFU is to create awareness that SUD is a medical condition that can be treated successfully and to promote the expansion of service-based solutions that are capable of interrupting this deadly epidemic. Statistics show that a person can break the cycle of relapse when they are connected to resources that provide “End to End” support, allowing for connection to critical services at any stage of the recovery process. These resources include DetoxCare; Medication Assisted and Residential Treatment; and Sober Living Homes and other Sober Lifestyle opportunities. EMPOWERMENT Through programs like our Sober Lifestyle Scholarships that provide sober housing and community center memberships, PFU is fighting to close the gaps in the recovery process. PFU is accomplishing this goal by creating partnerships with other innovative organizations like Fit to Recover, First Step House and Power Forward Inc. By creating safe spaces for people with SUD, PFU aims to provide individuals with a vision of what is possible when there is strong community support and a feeling of personal empowerment that a future with dignity and hope can be achieved no matter what has happened in the past . INNOVATION PFU, alongside partner Power Forward Inc,. are champions for groundbreaking SUD recovery resources and research. An example is the Dog Ownership In Recovery (DOER) program recently implemented in Massachusetts that is being reviewed by MIT for ways that the introduction of service animals in sober houses can stimulate naturopathic healing for individuals living in recovery. Progress is possible, and breakthroughs are on the horizon. PFU believes it, as well as the greater community,has an obligation to do what it can for those in need.
