Mission Statement
Tech Exchange's mission is to ensure that all families have a computer, internet access, and the technology skills necessary to improve and enhance their lives. We are dedicated to building a community of digitally proficient Bay Area residents who have full access online education, employment, health, financial, and civic services. Tech Exchange envisions a digitally connected Bay Area, where everyone has the technology resources they need to thrive.
About This Cause
Established in Oakland in 1995, Tech Exchange is a leader in the effort to close the digital divide. Tech Exchange was founded by a retired IBM exec who recognized the connection between digital access and wealth equity, and responded with a volunteer effort to teach students to refurbish and distribute donated computers. Tech Exchange now serves households throughout the Bay Area, operating with a professional staff of 30 and leveraging partnerships with regional corporations, government, and other changemakers to advance digital equity. Tech Exchange changes lives by connecting households with the essential digital tools they need. We take a sustainable approach by sourcing used devices from generous businesses. Next, staff technicians and interns in our workforce development program refurbish the devices at our Oakland warehouse. Our multilingual team then works with partners to distribute the computers to the community, and provides tech support, fundamental digital skills training, and broadband service enrollment guidance directly to individuals. Over the years, Tech Exchange has diverted 1,500+ tons of e-waste from landfills, distributed 100,000+ computers, provided free digital skills classes to 5,000+ adults, and connected 10,000+ individuals to internet service. In 2024, we are poised to significantly expand our services in new regions, while also developing our existing programs to provide an even more meaningful experience for each participant we serve.
