Mission Statement

Portland Rescue Mission (PRM) provides hot meals and emergency shelter as well as hope, practical support, and addiction recovery for men, women, and children experiencing homelessness and addiction in the Portland area. Our mission is to offer a path to life transformation to everyone who walks through the doors of our three service locations: The Burnside Shelter, The Harbor, and Shepherd’s Door.

About This Cause

Since 1949, Portland Rescue Mission has worked tirelessly to break the cycle of homelessness, addiction, and despair in the lives of hurting people in need. We have witnessed the cycle of homelessness and addiction for 71 years and understand the complexity of these experiences. Each of our programs has been developed with the specific intention of applying our fundamental relational philosophy in the context of meeting the physical, emotional, and logistical needs of those who are trapped in the suffering of homelessness and addiction. There are many factors that lead to homelessness including but not limited to childhood abuse, racism, unemployment, lack of affordable housing, mental or physical health challenges, and addictions. Life on the street magnifies these issues and introduces new threats that can quickly create a downward spiral into hopelessness. Reversing this spiral is nearly impossible for any individual to achieve on their own which is why we almost always find a single common feature in the lives of those we serve: a lack of healthy, stable, and supportive relationships. Portland Rescue Mission is the largest provider of emergency homeless services in the Portland metropolitan area. Our programs serve up to 900 hot meals every day, and over the course of a year, we serve more than 5,800 homeless men, women, and children. Our long-term residential recovery programs provide shelter, education, job training, counseling, and more for up to 100 families, including more than 100 children over the course of a year. Some noteworthy statistics: 81% of our addiction recovery program graduates over the last four years remain in stable housing and free from addiction. In 2019, a total of 1,772 unique volunteers served with us. This amounted to 24,476 hours of volunteer work -- equivalent to over 2 years and 9 months of non-stop serving! In 2019 we hit a new record and served over 370,000 meals mission-wide.
