Mission Statement

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a worldwide Catholic organization of laypersons, open to all who wish to live their faith by loving and serving their neighbor. Generally on a person-to-person basis, members of the Society help those in need, regardless of race, ethnicity, creed, gender, orientation, handicap or religion. The Society’s work may encompass any form of aid that alleviates suffering and it strives to discover and redress situations which cause suffering.

About This Cause

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul’s (SVdP) Portland Council, along with 47 parish-based Conferences in Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, Columbia, and Clatsop counties, provides emergency rent, utility, and food relief to individuals and families experiencing financial hardships. Clients include, but are not limited to, those who identify as having middle, low, or no income, those on fixed incomes, and those who receive government assistance. We serve anyone regardless of race, sex, religious affiliation, or mental or physical disabilities. The Portland Council’s most urgent need is finding additional funding sources for our Emergency Services rent, utility, and food relief programs. In calendar year 2022, over 5,900 rent and utility requests were successfully processed, and over $1.2 million in financial aid was distributed among those requests. The number of clients applying for aid so far in 2023 has remained constant and slightly ahead of last year’s overall figures. The staff and volunteers of SVdP’s Portland Council are dedicated to not only helping clients retain their housing, but helping to keep their power on and put food on the table. In order for SVdP to continue providing assistance for these basic necessities, we need help from donors who see the value of what we do in the community. In the face of despair, SVdP offers real life solutions, and a lot of hope, to those who struggle. Our most current, and also largest, special project is the reopening of a SVdP thrift store after the closure of our Portland-area stores over 15 years ago. We hope to achieve this goal by the end of 2023/beginning of 2024. The opening of a thrift store will provide another crucial revenue source to support our assistance programs and our team.
