Mission Statement

To improve lives and affect change by mobilizing the caring power of Jackson County communities. To build community by acting as advocate, convener, and facilitator on behalf of local nonprofit organizations raising critically needed resources and investing them where they have the most impact. This belief forms the foundation for our strategies for education, income, health and transportation - the building blocks of a good life.

About This Cause

United Way of Jackson County remains focused on the building blocks of a good life – education, income, health, and transportation. In education, our Big Idea Next project helps students enrolled in alternative programs or schools complete high school. For our income work, we provide emergency financial assistance through our Hope Chest account and do free income tax prep for people earning $55,000 or less a year at the VITA tax site at the Teresa McCormick Center on the Harry & David campus. Our most significant health program is In This Together, a suicide prevention and mental wellness program. And for the first time in 5 years, our county’s numbers are going down! Finally, our transportation work is to remove barriers for people with disabilities, aging people and people with low income. This work helps to get folks to work, to school and to needed appointments. The past 20 months have been all about responding to the dual disasters of COVID and the wildfires. We helped more than 3,200 people pay their bills by investing $2.3 million in our COVID relief efforts. And we’re very active in the fire recovery. We’ve helped more than 845 families with immediate, intermediate and now long-term resettling. We’ve invested more than $2.2 million in fire recovery efforts. We’ve pledged to raise another $500,000 per year for the next three years to help our community recover, reimagine, and rebuild following the Almeda and South Obenchain fires. We are active in funding over 30 programs and 19 strategic partnerships with community organizations and agencies that provide direct services for everything from prenatal care to bereavement counseling, and much of life that falls in between. At its core, United Way of Jackson County believes people are connected and interdependent. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. We all win when children form healthy attachments through a loving family, when they succeed in school, graduate and make successful transitions to adult responsibilities. We all win when families are financially stable, when people have good health, and when people are engaged and connected. We all win when people have transportation to pursue education, access to medical services and work. Through our role as convener, facilitator and advocate, our goal is to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying causes of problems.
