About This Cause
MPD has been on the cutting edge of public defense since its inception in 1971. Formed as a non-profit law firm, it contracts with the State of Oregon for indigent defense services. MPD was the first public defender organization under this system. MPD is the largest single provider of trial level public defense services in the state of Oregon, with offices in both Multnomah and Washington counties. We are mission driven, client-centered, and exist to provide the highest quality representation possible for our clients. Community Law launched as a civil legal division of Metropolitan Public Defenders in 2016, with a focus on barrier reduction work for people involved in, or at risk of involvement in, the criminal justice system. We help undo the damage done by an imbalanced criminal justice system by reducing social stigma, increasing economic and housing opportunities, and stabilizing families. Our model is to partner with government agencies and community based organizations to work together to help participants navigate the legal system and remove barriers.
