DISABILITY RIGHTS OREGON

PORTLAND, Oregon, 97205-2748 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote and defend the rights of individuals with disabilities.

About This Cause

Every day, Disability Rights Oregon works to make the lives of Oregonians with disabilities better. Serving as Oregon’s federally mandated Protection & Advocacy System since 1977, we go into places others can’t. We shine a light on conditions in schools, group homes, jails, prisons, hospitals, and other facilities across the state, and we fight to uphold the civil rights of Oregonians with disabilities regardless of where they live. We push communities to reshape schools, workplaces, parks, places of business, and public systems to ensure that members of our community truly belong. Our nonprofit legal advocacy spans every type of disability, at every age, in every type of place. To help the greatest number of Oregonians with disabilities, we advocate for lasting change through public education and outreach, legislative advocacy, institutional monitoring, direct client representation, class-action litigation, and information and referral, including publishing numerous “Know Your Rights” guides. Disability rights and other civil rights laws are rooted in a fundamental ideal: that every person, irrespective of their inherent differences, is equal—regardless of where we come from, how we worship, how we look, who we love, or whether we have a disability. Honoring our common humanity is a foundation for our vision of the world.
