Mission Statement

Serendipity opened in 1979 with the goal of providing structured and individualized education that would allow young people who were failing within the public school system to develop their skills, social competencies, and personal confidence. That year we opened with just three students and a tiny staff. These beginnings provided Serendipity with the caring environment that we have sustained through all our ensuing growth. New programs were gradually added over the years, with mental health supports becoming more and more integrated. Our niche became one of serving children and adolescents with severe and multiple psychiatric challenges. Serendipity is now the largest and oldest school of its kind; the only Portland area facility licensed to integrate mental health treatment with special education in a school-based setting. Serendipity has a staff of 83 employees and 14 Board Members.
