FRIENDS OF PORTLAND FIRE & RESCUE

PORTLAND, Oregon, 97204-3509 United States

Mission Statement

In the event of a regional emergency such as a severe winter storm, flood or earthquake, households need to be prepared to be on their own for at least two weeks. Neighborhoods need to be prepared for self-sufficiency, too. Volunteer neighborhood rescuers will likely be first on-the-scene when firefighters and police are slowed by impassable streets or overwhelmed by calls for help. Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NETs; dba Friends of Portland Fire & Rescue) are Portland residents trained by Portland Fire & Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance within their own neighborhoods. NET members are trained to save lives and property until professional responders can arrive. These volunteers are specially trained to help others without putting themselves in harm’s way.

About This Cause

Though NET classes are free, volunteers are expected to purchase their own response equipment (a cost of around $85). This is a barrier to participation for some volunteers, and therefore, charity funds are used to purchase response equipment kits for volunteers in need.
