Mission Statement

MediaRites is a tax-exempt, 501 (c ) 3, nonprofit production organization based in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to telling the stories of diverse cultures and giving voice to the unheard through the arts, education and media projects. Since 1984, MediaRites has produced award-winning radio and film documentaries, interactive websites, theatre and outreach projects. Our artistic documentaries have garnered awards 2 Peabody awards, the Asian American JournalistsAward, the National Federation of Community Broadcasters, the Clarion, the Heart of America, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism award, and the Casey Medal, Heart of America Award from the American Legion Auxiliary, the Clarion Award in a nonprofit online publication by The Association of Women in Communications for Stories1st.org, the National Lesbian and Gay Journalism Award and the National Public Affairs Award From the National Federation of Community Broadcasters.

About This Cause

MediaRites Organizational Summary and Activities: MediaRites is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization established March 28,1984 that has brought arts outreach and theatre to the Pacific Northwest and quality media productions, primarily in radio and film to the country. MediaRites has a staff of 2, a board of directors of 7, and brings together several independent contractors per year in its arts and outreach programs. We’re currently rebuilding the board. Our current executive producer, Dmae Roberts, has led the organization since 1991. We are currently producing films for The ISM Project about the intersections of race, gender, orientation and national origin. From 1991 through 2003 MediaRites Productions produced: • Five NPR series and specials nationally distributed to over 100 stations: Legacies: Tales From America, Legacies: Faith, Hope and Peace, from the Legacies Intergenerational Project, Sorting Through Shadows, and 1stPerson: Stories of Loss, Hope and Peace. • Three original multi-ethnic theatre productions: “Lady Buddha,” “Tell Me, Janie Bigo,” and “Volcano Embrace.” • The Grief Project that included staging Ellen McLaughlin’s “Tongue of a Bird” and creating the original stage play “The Time Between.” • Over a dozen educational outreach projects partnering with schools and social service agencies including a four-year partnership with Binnsmead Middle School and a one-year partnership with Roosevelt High School. • Two Handbooks: The Legacies Handbook and CD, a how-to oral history guide for families, schools and community groups and Sorting Through Shadows, a book /CD exploring youth mental health problems. • An online magazine, Stories1st.org, demonstrating audio and writing since 2001. • One-hour radio specials distributed to 200 public stations: Heart of Nature, stories of disabled youth and their relationship to nature, Growing Up, Growing Strong, stories about young women coming of age. • Workshops: The Breast Cancer Radio Arts Project that taught creative writing, radio and visual art to breast cancer survivors, in partnership with KBOO radio. • Environmental Street Stories with the P:EAR to create urban environmental radio pieces with the help of homeless and transitional youth. 2004 Activities Included: • The Breast Cancer Monologues, a one-hour documentary based on the workshops. • Creating community arts workshops and events for crime survivors in the Restorative Justice Through Art project in Portland. • Continuing Stories1st.org with the addition of FlashSTORIES, an experimental web art project. 2004-2007 Activities Included: • Crossing East project, an eight-hour Asian American history documentary series for distribution on Public Radio International and airing on 230 stations. This series garnered the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award in 2007. This largest MediaRites project involved about 50 people. There were two full-time staff positions, plus independent contractors, dozens of producers, musicians, actors, and a team of scholars. This project also produced six outreach events on the West Coast and Hawaii as part of the series. 2008-2013 Activities Included: • 2010- Coming Home: The Return of the Alutiiq Masks – a one-hour documentary about efforts by the Alutiiq people on Kodiak Island, Alaska, working to preserve their art, history, language and culture. • 2011- In The Mix: Conversations with Artists Between Races – a one-hour documentary about Mixed Race artists. Distributed on Pulbic Radio International. • 2012-13 - MediaRites New Media and Developmental Seminars – media seminars at MediaRites’ professional recording studios to offer new media training and professional artist development. 2014-2015 Activities included: • Mei Mei Film and Archive Project • Theatre Diaspora Staged Reading Play and Discussion Series 2016-2017 Activities Included: • Theatre Diaspora Staged Reading Play and Discussion Series • Crossing East Archive Project for the 10th anniversary of the Peabody-winning series • Relations one-hour radio documentary to be distributed on PRX.org as part of the CE Archive project • Refugee Dreams Revisited, youth performance in Multnomah County Libraries as part of the CE Archive project.
