About This Cause
Open Door is a HUD-approved local housing counseling agency and a participating member in the Washington County Continuum Care Housing and Supportive Services Network (HSSN). We offer a warm and supportive environment for homeless individuals to come and receive encouragement and assistance in attaining their goals. The primary objective of our homeless supportive service programs is to help low-income families and individuals avoid becoming homeless, and to aid those persons already experiencing homelessness. We want to return individuals to an environment of stable employment and secure housing. Certified and trained counselors provide one-on-one focused counseling to help assess a client's current housing and financial situation and to provide education and resources to help them move past barriers that are enabling them from overcoming homelessness. Open Door is in a unique position to provide “first-contact” with many individuals experiencing homelessness. The organization has an established drop-in center offering daytime shelter, case management, mental health counseling, food, clothing, showers and many other basic needs. Open Door’s daytime shelter acts as a warming shelter in the winter months and a cooling shelter in the summer months that draws many in from the streets so they can receive basic needs such as shelter, food, clothing and a daily shower. The organization also maintains an emergency fund to help those experiencing homelessness to obtain personal documentation that may be a barrier when obtaining housing and employment. The fund can assist with obtaining birth certificates, State IDs, as well as, helping with emergency rent assistance. This fund assists many homeless individuals each year.
