Mission Statement

To engage readers, support writers, and inspire the next generation with great literature.

About This Cause

Literary Arts is a community-based nonprofit literary center located in downtown Portland with a 39-year history of engaging readers, supporting writers, and inspiring the next generation with great literature. Literary Arts began in 1984 with a small lecture series designed to bring leading authors and thinkers to Portland. Within four years, demand for tickets moved Portland Arts & Lectures (PA&L) to the 2,700–seat Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, where it currently resides. Now a Portland tradition, the series brings the brightest minds to present original talks about literature, art, history, and contemporary culture before one of the largest lecture audiences in the country. In 1993, we joined with the Oregon Institute of Literary Arts to support and celebrate Oregon writers and publishers. This new chapter brought the Oregon Book Awards & Fellowships (OBA&F) to the organization, through which we have honored nearly 500 Oregon writers and publishers and distributed more than $750,000 in grants. In 1996, we started Writers in the Schools (WITS) to provide teens with opportunities to practice writing and develop into strong communicators. In 1998, we introduced the Oregon Book Awards Author Tour, presenting readings by award-winning authors and finalists in communities throughout the state. And, in 2005, we introduced the Delve program, which engages readers in discussion-based seminars led by local scholars on classic and contemporary literature. Collectively, our programs reach more than 13,500 writers, readers, teachers, and students across the state each year.
