Hoyt Arboretum Friends brings people and trees together. We create meaningful learning experiences in a unique global tree collection that we nurture in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation.
About This Cause
Hoyt Arboretum is Portland's museum of living trees where we grow and exhibit trees and plants from around the world while educating the community and conserving vitally important plant biodiversity. Hoyt Arboretum Friends (HAF) is a membership-based, nonprofit organization working in partnership with Portland Parks & Recreation to support Hoyt Arboretum. Hoyt Arboretum is free to the public and home to over 2,000 species exhibited in a global collection of 6,000 trees and plants, 63 of which are vulnerable or endangered. The arboretum is open from 5am to 9:30pm every day of the year. Visitors will find over 12 miles of trails, a world-class collection of trees and plants, a Visitor Center and Nature Store, 20 interpretive panels, complimentary trail maps for adults and children plus other materials to help them learn about the collection and recreate in the arboretum. Since 1986 HAF has made numerous capital improvements to Hoyt Arboretum including building the Redwood Observation Deck and Visitor Center, renovating the Stevens Picnic Pavilion and adding irrigation systems in the Maple and Magnolia collections, which were subsequently recognized by their respective national associations. In the last two years HAF has created a variety of educational tools. These include 269 way-finding signs, 11 map panels, 20 interpretive panels, classes and a courtyard native-alpine garden. Over 30,000 complimentary trail maps are given to visitors annually. Additionally, a publicly-accessible plant database featuring all 6,000 trees and plants in the collection is now available to the public on the Hoyt Arboretum website.
