Mission Statement

NICWA is dedicated to the well-being of American Indian and Alaska Native children and families.

About This Cause

The National Indian Child Welfare Association (NICWA) is the leading national Native-led nonprofit focused on preventing child abuse and neglect. We work with Native communities to build capacity to protect their most vulnerable citizens, their children. NICWA works to support the safety, health, and spiritual strength of American Indian and Alaska Native children along the broad continuum of their lives. We support tribes in building the capacity to prevent child abuse and neglect through positive systems change at the state, federal, and tribal levels. We are the most comprehensive source of information on American Indian and Alaska Native child welfare. NICWA is a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon. Together, our partners, board, and staff work to protect Native children and keep them connected to their family, community, and culture. We love being advocates for Native children. Founded as a grassroots organization 40 years ago, NICWA continues to meet the evolving needs of Native communities. We are a nonprofit organization whose main constituencies are tribal governments, urban and reservation-based social service programs, and the frontline staff who serve Native children and families. Our national expertise and depth of knowledge in how to bring about important change to child welfare systems for the benefit of Native children and families is widely recognized across the country. NICWA has experience working with states and counties to evaluate their services for Native children and families and improve data collection to inform critical program decisions. The board of directors is 100% Native by mandate of our by-laws and represents 17 different tribes, including two First Nations from Canada. Metrics for staff diversity are based on self-identification and has fluctuated between 40—80% Native and approximately 77% identified as a person of color. On a personal note, several board and staff members have lived experience with the child welfare system in different ways.
