Mission Statement

The mission of Sunset Youth Services is to foster long-term stability and growth for in-risk youth and families, through caring relationships and supportive services.

About This Cause

Located in San Francisco’s Sunset District, Sunset Youth Services’ innovative attachment community has been serving in-risk youth and families since 1993. Every day, we build safe relationships with kids and families. We believe that given the right support and opportunities, everyone has the ability to realize their potential. We do this through our programs which are as follows: Digital Arts: In our Digital Arts Program, youth get access to and training in digital audio and film production, so they can express themselves, learn marketable skills, tell their stories, and build confidence in themselves and their work. Through a series of project-based learning labs, they practice writing, recording, editing and mastering their own music, films, animations, photography, and audio projects. Each youth develops their own professional portfolio, suitable to use in career planning or to pursue further education. UpStar Records: UpStar Records is our youth-run record label aimed at turning today’s hip hop enthusiasts into tomorrow’s digital technology leaders. This innovative workforce development program provides youth employment and leadership opportunities. Trained by a cadre of talented industry professionals, youth get hands-on experience recording, mixing, mastering, releasing, distributing and promoting their own music and videos. Through project-based learning, youth gain knowledge, skills, and abilities to be successful in their path to a career or continued education. Case Management: Transitional Age Youth (TAY) Case Management: Transitional age youth are young people ages 16-24 that need supportive relationships to help facilitate the transition from youth to adulthood. Because these young adults are no longer in the school system, or have aged out of most programs and services targeted to children, they face unique challenges and needs. These young adults receive case management and services including life skills workshops, financial literacy, resume writing, assistance in accessing healthcare, and educational support. Violence Prevention: Juvenile Case Managers build lasting relationships with high-risk youth and young adults who are or have been involved in the juvenile or criminal legal system. They assess needs, identify options, work with each youth and family to develop a plan of action, and provide encouragement, support and advocacy. As members of the Juvenile Justice Providers Association and the District Attorney’s Youth Task Force, we work to make better policies for youth and advocate for restorative justice. Family Support: We provide a wide variety of opportunities, support and resources for parents and guardians in order to build stronger communities and resilient families. Our Family Case Manager works closely with families in crisis to stabilize them and ensure they are able to make a safe home for their children. We help low-income parents who face challenges in the areas of food, housing, child care, employment and health care. Twice a year, we facilitate the Positive Parenting Program, a 12-week parenting training intensive that provides parents skills and strategies for managing their children’s behavior and for coping with their own stress, anxiety and anger.
