Mission Statement
Maybelle Center is the community health organization working together with neighbors in downtown Portland to reverse the root causes of social isolation. We promote social health by helping create a sense of belonging with adults facing the stigmas of mental health and financial poverty through our Neighborhood Programs in affordable housing and our Assisted Living Services.
About This Cause
Maybelle Center creates community and connection in Old Town-Downtown Portland for people experiencing poverty. We believe: • That no one deserves to live in isolation • That every person has inherent worth and dignity • That we as people, share more similarities than differences • And, that the health of a community can be measured by how its members care for each other. What makes us different from other social service agencies is our relationship-centered approach. Maybelle Center envisions a community where all are respected, safe and supported. This may sound simple, but for those who live on the margins under the burden of poverty, mental illness and/or addiction, this is a vision that moves the heart. Portland is home to a marginalized population that includes people who are poor, suffering from chronic mental and/or physical illness, or suffering from addictions. Some have been formerly incarcerated or hospitalized. These people often dismissed by the larger community and repeatedly victimized by institutions, government structures, emotional trauma, and/or violence. They often feel alone, without family or friends to celebrate their joys or witness their struggles. Inside this hardship, the people we serve can tend to question the value of their lives as human beings. Human frailty and risk are high, human freedom and dignity are low. Our vision is to build a healthier community and world. We believe that unconditional caring has a profound and lasting positive impact on the health of individuals and communities. Our model is simple yet powerful. It begins with a visit from a caring volunteer to a lonely person isolated by poverty, mental illness, addiction, or all three. Over time, and with patience, we build larger, interlocking circles of connection, community, health, and love—all radiating outward into the world from those first visits. Imagine the possibilities!
