About This Cause

Policy, Advocacy & Community Engagement Our policy, advocacy, and community engagement work drives early childhood advocacy efforts in Oregon that result in increased public investment in programs and services for young children and their families. CI leads a coalition of advocates to advance an early childhood agenda built on equity and justice. We elevate the voices of parents, providers, and educators in our advocacy work, and prioritize Black and Indigenous people and communities, children and communities of color, and rural perspectives. Early Works Early Works is our longest standing initiative that launched in 20XX at Earl Boyles Elementary in Southeast Portland and in 20XX at Yoncalla Elementary School in Yoncalla, Oregon. Early Works has demonstrated a new approach to supporting families and young children. This includes offering early learning experiences that are aligned with elementary school so that kids easily transition from preschool into kindergarten and beyond.  Early School Success (ESS) In 2019, CI launched ESS to work with educators to create engaging classroom experiences for children that have continuity from preschool through the elementary grades. ESS is designed to make that alignment possible and transform learning by bringing together students, families, and educators to forge a seamless experience, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. The goal is to support school success and reduce known disparities in educational outcomes, and for preschool and elementary school to be experienced as one consistent and high-quality educational trajectory. School districts participating in ESS include Forest Grove, Beaverton, Lincoln County, Scappoose, and St. Helens.  Health & Learning Initiative Children’s Institute plays a role in designing, advocating for, and building health and education systems that better serve every child and family. We have helped with the development and implementation of incentive metrics for Oregon’s 16 Coordinated Care Organizations (CCOs) as a strategic area where we can drive the state’s health care system to improve and expand access to care services that support child well-being and school readiness.  Research A tremendous amount of academic research and population data exists in the early childhood field, and Children’s Institute plays a key role in disseminating information, making data accessible, and translating complex information into concrete tools for policy and decision makers to help them craft program and policy solutions in the Oregon context.  Academic research and community needs assessments influence program development and the way in which CI pilots its work in communities around the state. CI then learns from ongoing evaluation in order to improve programs and bring forward scalable practices and policy concepts at the state and national level. Communications We use a robust communications strategy to advance CI’s vision to build a socially just and equitable Oregon where all children have the love, care, and education they need. That strategy employs a range of tools and tactics that allow us to share vital information about the early childhood landscape, define priority issues and policy and advocacy opportunities, and strengthen the narrative about the value and importance of early childhood investments. Our communications work also includes strengthening internal communications and solidifying equity, mission, vision, and values alignment across the
