About This Cause

Springfield, Oregon is a community dedicated to creating a bright and successful future for its youth. The Springfield Education Foundation (SEF) works with the school district to ensure that our children are solid learners with the knowledge and skills to be productive citizens and work to their highest potential. Citizen support and involvement in the school district is visible at every level—as volunteers, policy advocates, and financial supporters. We care about our students! Govern by a 17 member board of directors, the Springfield Education Foundation is overseen by Executive Director Christina San Filippo with the help of a full-time Executive Assistant, the only two staff members. All board members give their time, experience, and an annual gift. The SEF Board is comprised of parents, educators, retired educators, business owners and leaders, alumni, and other individuals who care about public education. The Foundation proudly supports: • Literacy: SEF provides funds for two innovative district programs—Gift of Literacy, a yearlong celebration of literacy that provides all first-graders with their own book and energizes community volunteers and organizations to get involved, and Battle of the Books, a district-wide, quiz show-like tournament that encourages and broadens students’ reading interests. • Innovative Teachers: Each year, SEF provides funding for a number of innovative project requests, written by district educators, ranging from the purchase of music instruments and science lab materials to funding special multicultural performances for students. Each grant is connected to academic curriculum. • Technology: Through SEF grants and other sources, SEF aims to assist the district in providing up-to-date tools and resources to our students. We have seen first hand, that when the right technology gets into the hands of our innovative teachers, our students' attendance, participation, and test scores go up --- it provides the motivation that is a necessary part of learning. • Arts and Music: The district is committed to the arts and music. SEF funds guest artists to work with our students in the schools, grants that fund live performances, and donations given directly from individuals to fund musical offerings. • Basic Needs: As more than half of the student population of Springfield Public Schools qualifies for free and reduced lunch, ensuring that our students arrive at school ready to learn is an important part of what the foundation funds. Clothing, school supplies, transportation, and food are items we support. • In order to increase our mission and scope, SEF acts as the fiscal sponsor for the Safe Routes to School program, the Gift of Literacy, Belly-Full, Huerta-Chavez Celebration, and the annual MLK Celebration in Springfield.
