Mission Statement

Community Transitional School is a tuition-free, non-profit PreK-8th grade private school dedicated to the educational needs of children whose families are experiencing homelessness. Since the school's founding in 1990, our mission has remained the same: to provide a stable educational environment for children at risk of school failure that promotes their personal and academic growth. We firmly believe that education is the most valuable intervention in breaking the generational cycles of homelessness and poverty.

About This Cause

For over 30 years, CTS has combined character development lessons with a curriculum focused on literacy that's designed for children who have missed excessive amounts of school due to homelessness. Our Transportation Program covers a 120-square miles area, picking our students up from wherever they're located (homeless/DV shelters, cheap motels, parking lots where they live in their vehicles), to ensure they're able to continually attend our school and academically progress, regardless of how many times they relocate throughout the school year. Through the incorporation of Instructional Assistants, we use a small-group instruction strategy that promotes accelerated academic recovery and student engagement. We also provide two meals a day, groceries for the weekend, school supplies, clothing and hygiene products, as well as access to health care. On average, we see a yearly enrollment of between 200-240 students with an average daily attendance record of 90% which is drastically better than that of the public school system. This is a testament to our ability to reach this underserved population, as well as a testament of our students' desire to learn and improve their circumstances.
