Mission Statement
The Americans Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center works with abused Americans and their children in foreign countries to provide domestic violence and child abuse advocacy, resources and tools so that they can navigate the complicated jurisdictional, legal and social international landscapes, to be able to live their lives free of abuse either in the foreign country or back in the United States. This is achieved via an international toll free crisis line, 866-USWOMEN, accessible from 175 countries, serving a population estimated at 8.7 million American civilians overseas, the 750,000 million military personnel and their families overseas and the 80 million Americans that travel abroad annually. Support services include intensive case management, safety planning, and danger to safety relocation, legal services, emergency assistance including housing, rent, utilities and counseling. Over 500 families per year are provided with life-saving services.
About This Cause
Americans living and traveling in foreign countries may unfortunately find themselves victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. More young American women are victims of forced marriage overseas as a result of cross cultural marriages. The organization exists to provide life saving, wrap around services to these victims, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The organization assists with cases that take only a few days to resolve to intensive case management lasting years. Since inception the organization has assisted over 3000 victims in over 100 countries. It is the only organization of it's kind in the world and was founded by an American women who escaped the United Arab Emirates in 1999 with her three children as a response to the lack of resources available to her as an American overseas. She fled to Portland, Oregon where the organization remains headquartered.
