Mission Statement
Sunstone Montessori School’s mission is to create curious, independent, and empathetic humans, and we serve almost 200 children, ranging in age from 15 months to 12 years old. We are a staff of 30, with a growing alumni contingent. We do this both in and out of the classroom through a variety of social, educational and community events such as our annual Fall Festival and Earth Day celebrations, parent education seminars and workshops (free morning lecture series and parent education evenings), and family social get-togethers (bowling, swimming, skiing, picnics, family dinners). Sunstone Montessori is a small, independent school with a stellar history of accomplishments with some of our first alums headed to Stanford, among other destinations. We are committed to seeing our students excel, learn collaboration, be good neighbors, work diligently, engage in our community, and listen and play well with others.
About This Cause
Sunstone Montessori School occupies a former Portland Public Schools building in a densely populated region of Portland with very clay-like soils and poor drainage. The Sunstone campus is a large and loved destination for residents and families who picnic, dog walk and use the playground, and we offer community events and access to thousands of area residents. This project will demonstrate the effectiveness of runoff remediation strategies in residential and businesses in the SW Portland area, and we look forward to working with our neighbors to showcase what can be done at their homes and businesses. What makes us unique? a. Sunstone Montessori offers a full education to students aged 15 months through grade Six, in contrast with other schools which offer only some grade levels. Sunstone Montessori School is a community that nurtures the next generation of Explorers of their world, Stewards of the earth, Lovers of learning, and Skilled contributors to society. Our goal is to create curious, independent, and empathetic humans. b. Geography for schools serving young students is an important consideration. We are uniquely situated to serve our region, while drawing from a larger footprint as well. c. We occupy a three block campus with a wonderful 1916 main building, sports field, and upgraded outbuildings. Most Montessori schools do not have such an expansive facility, serving families and the community as well. We are the neighborhood anchor. d. Sunstone has an ethos of collaboration and leadership: in 2007, two Montessori schools merged to form Sunstone and for the past 8 years, the parent community has gained in size and trust in Sunstone’s leadership and educational excellence. e. Sustainability: Our Green School seeks to model behavior across the spectrum of human activity, and imbue our students with a lifelong sense of our responsibility to our planet, and fully encounter the outdoor natural world as part of the education experience.
